Brands and lineups

Brands differ in fit, construction and where and how they build. Compare the exact model number, because one name often covers several toes, heights and ratings.

Brands such as Thorogood, Red Wing, Danner, Keen Utility, Ariat, Timberland PRO, Carhartt and Wolverine each sell several lines at different price points. Within one brand, a heritage welted line and a lighter cemented line can feel like boots from two different makers.

Fit follows the last, the form a boot is built on. Some brands run long, some run wide in the toe box, and safety-toe versions can fit differently from the soft toe version of the same style. Reviews that mention your usual size in another brand are more useful than general praise.

The model name is not enough. A style can come in steel, alloy and composite toes, with and without EH, waterproofing or insulation, each with its own item number. Check the label specs on the exact listing you buy against the requirements on your site.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every boot of a model name has the same toe and ratings.
  • Ordering your usual size in a new brand without checking its size chart.
  • Comparing price without comparing construction: welted and cemented boots are not like for like.
