ASTM F2413 label decoder
Every safety-toe boot sold to the F2413 standard carries a label on the tongue or inside the shaft. Type what it says, or tap the markings, and the decoder explains each line.
Short answer
Line 1 names the standard and its revision year (F2413-18). Line 2 gives M or F and the toe ratings: I/75 for impact and C/75 for compression. Further lines add hazards: Mt metatarsal, EH electrical hazard, SD static dissipative, PR puncture resistant, Cd conductive, CS chain saw and DI dielectric.

- F2413-18Standard and revision · line 1ASTM F2413, the US performance standard for protective (safety toe) footwear, in its 2018 revision. The boot was tested to the requirements of that edition.
- MMen's footwear · line 2The boot was tested as men's footwear. The test settings differ slightly for men's and women's sizes; the protection class is the same.
- I/75Impact resistance · line 2The toe cap was tested against an impact of 75 foot-pounds, like a heavy object dropped on the toe.
- C/75Compression resistance · line 2The toe cap was tested under a compression load of 2,500 pounds-force, like a rolling or resting load on the toe.
- EHElectrical hazard · line 3+The outsole and heel were tested to withstand 18,000 volts at 60 Hz for 1 minute with no more than 1.0 mA of current leakage, under dry conditions. This is secondary protection against accidental contact with live circuits, and it is reduced by wear, cuts, embedded metal and wet conditions.
- PRPuncture resistant · line 3+A plate built into the sole was tested to resist puncture by a pointed object at the F2413 requirement of 270 pounds-force, for nails, screws and rebar ends.
What the label does not cover
Slip resistance, waterproofing, insulation, heat, chemical or cut resistance (other than CS) and fit are not part of the F2413 markings. Check the maker's own specs for those.
The label describes the results of standard tests. It does not guarantee protection in every situation. Check your site's footwear requirements.
How the label is laid out
ASTM F2413 sets the tests a protective toe boot has to pass and how the results are printed. The label is usually sewn into the tongue or the inside of the shaft. Line 1 names the standard and year, line 2 the gender and the toe ratings, and any further lines the extra hazards the boot was tested for.
- 1Standard and year: ASTM F2413, 2018 revision
- 2M or F: men's or women's footwear
- 3I/75: toe impact, 75 foot-pounds
- 4C/75: toe compression, 2,500 pounds-force
- 5Mt/75: metatarsal guard
- 6EH: electrical hazard sole, secondary protection
- 7PR: puncture resistant plate
- 8SD: static dissipative, class in megohms
- 9Cd: conductive, never combined with EH

Soft toe boots and ASTM F2892
A boot without a safety toe can still carry EH, SD or slip ratings, but it is labeled to ASTM F2892 instead of F2413. If your site asks for safety toe footwear, an F2892 label alone does not meet it. Toe types are compared in safety toes and ratings.
